Gynecologist Accused of Rape and Sexual Harrassment Continued to Practice Anyway
robot-heart-politics:

From the Chicago Tribune. Potentially triggering, so read at your own risk.
Tameka Stokes was 19 when a pelvic disease diagnosis brought herto the exam table of Bruce Sylvester Smith, a gynecologist at Chicago’s Kennedy Medical Service Corp., in May 2000.
According to Stokes’ allegations in state records, Smith raped her while her legs were in stirrups.
As she left the exam room, Stokes broke down crying to a nurse, who immediately called police, records show. After submitting to a rape exam at South Shore Hospital, Stokes provided detectives with a description of Smith’s actions — allegations later shared with the state agency that polices professional license-holders, the documents show.
Thank goodness for ethical nurses. But still.
This article describes many women’s worst nightmare; a normal OB/GYN appointment leaves many of us feeling somewhat violated. Some women experience pain during even the most routine of pelvic exams— which is only heightened by the physically vulnerable position of being totally naked but for a crinkly paper dress, with one’s feet in uncomfortable stirrups.
In short, this man repeatedly placed women as young as 19 (who trusted him as a medical professional) in extremely physically vulnerable positions, and then he raped them. I shudder to think of how many women and girls were raped and didn’t have the strength to report it, for fear they wouldn’t be believed. I wonder: how many women reported it and were ignored before someone finally listened?
And the worst part? He’s going to be allowed to reapply for a license this summer and could potentially be practicing again within the year.
Makes me ill. Absolutely ill. If anyone has any doubt that we live in a society totally flooded with rape apologism, look no further. If a doctor— who swears to first and foremost do no harm— will not be held fully accountable for his preying on vulnerable patients, either by the police or the medical community, then something is seriously, seriously, seriously wrong with the system.

For the past like three weeks she’s been wearing like next to nothing … I think in light of what happened … and as inexcusable as it was for that horrific guy to go in and try to peep on her in her hotel room … in some way, if I’m him, I’m like, ‘man, I could have just waited 12 weeks (nervous laughter from crowd)’ … I could have seen this, a little bit less, without the prison time.
Elizabeth Hasselbeck discussing Erin Andrews’ outfits on Dancing With The Stars. yes! watching erin andrews knowingly and intentionally perform on a television show for which she receives money is totally the same as violating her privacy! (via abbyjean)
Again, what is centered is the male gaze and what benefits the man in question gets — rather than the consent of the woman in question, her knowledge and approval of and control over what is viewed, when, in what context, to what extent. Hasselbeck makes sense if all you’re thinking of is whether the guy gets his rise on. Because the woman isn’t a full person who would be capable of giving consent or whose consent would be at all important — she’s just the object for the use and pleasure of the actual person in the situation (the man).
